The Odds of Winning the Lottery

What are the chances that the lottery ticket that you’re holding in your hand is a winner? This sort of question is an applied probability problem. With millions of dollars on the line, it would be good to have a solid answer. What are the odds of winning the lottery? How Does The Lottery Work? To answer this sort of question we need to know how a lottery works. In lotteries, a person plays by buying a ticket with a choice of numbers from a certain range. At a specified time the organization running the lottery randomly generates numbers from this same range. The grand prize, sometimes worth several millions of dollars, is awarded for matching all of the numbers. In some lotteries, lesser amounts are paid for matching all but one or two of the numbers. Those are the generalities, but we need to know the specifics of the game that you purchased a ticket for. These specifics will calculate the exact probability that you have of winning. A Sample Game One game, known by various names such as Daily 4 or Pick 4, involves choosing four numbers from 0 to 9. The order of these digits is important, so 1234 is a different choice of digits than 1243 or 1324. The probability of winning this lottery is given by determining the total number of four-digit numbers possible. Since each of the numbers is chosen independently and there are ten choices for each, the total number of four digit numbers is 10410000. This means that the probability of winning is 1/10000 0.01%. Games of this sort typically do not pay that much and are not what people associate with winning the lottery. A typical payout for a $1 bet on a lottery such as this is $5,000. While this sounds good -- who wouldn‘t want to multiply their money by 5000 -- realize that on average you would have to play thousands of times to make winning likely. Another Lottery Game Another type of lottery game pays more if you win it, but it is much harder to win. An example is where six numbers are chosen from 1 to 48. Here the order of the numbers is not important, and so we need to calculate a combination. We can choose six number from 48 in a total of C(48, 6). By the combination formula this number is 48!/(6!42!) 12,271,512. As matching all of these numbers perfectly accounts for one of these combinations, the probability of matching and winning millions is 1/12,271,512. How Likely Is It? So those are the numbers, is there any good way to interpret them? Let’s look at the millionaire game and its probability of winning at 1/12,271,512. Winning this is very unlikely. To be assured of a 50% chance of winning you would need to buy over eight million different tickets. The number 12,271,512 is roughly that of the population of the entire metro area of Los Angeles, California. So the probability of winning the lottery is the same as running into a particular person, chosen in advance while walking the streets of LA. Another way of looking at this is to look at other probabilities. Numbers are somewhat hard to come by, but it’s been estimated that 100 people a year in the U.S. are struck by lightning. With the current population at 307 million, the probability that you will be struck by lightning this year is 100/307,000,000 1/3,070,000. So you’re four times more likely to be struck by lightning than to win the lottery. Sure, some people win millions in the lottery. It’s just very likely that it’s not going to be you.

A Brief Note On Concentration And Surface Water - 2289 Words

Estimating Bifenthrin Concentration in Surface water in Urban Sacramento. Introduction Pyrethroid insecticides have replaced organophosphates (OP) insecticides, such as, diazinon and chlorpyrifos for structural pest control and landscape maintenance in most urban environments in the United States in recent times. Pyrethroids are manufactured derivatives of pyrethrins, which are natural insecticides that are produced by certain species of chrysanthemum. These insecticides are neurotoxins and focus on the central nervous system of insects’, thereby, making it exceptionally viable in pest control. These chemicals are broadly utilized by professional applicators to keep pests out of structures either as landscape application, or as perimeter treatments. Other than professional applications which are documented, pyrethroids are also incorporated in many pest control products that are designed for homeowners and available at retail stores, however the utilization of these items are not all around reported documented (Moran, 2006). The combination of these uses (profes sionals and homeowners) aids in the increase presence of pyrethroids on urban landscape and structures which are later washed-off to urban creeks. The most commonly suspected modes of transport of pesticide residues from urban application sites to downstream pesticide contamination is by means of irrigation (dry) or runoff (rain). Effects of Outward Foreign Direct Investment Essay Example For Students

Effects of Outward Foreign Direct Investment Essay The Effects of Foreign Direct Investment on the Home CountryForeign Direct Investment (FDI) could be defined as a minimum 10 percent investment of equity or capital by a firm based in one country (home economy) to an enterprise resident in another country (the host economy). The new entity then becomes a multinational enterprise (MNE). Many companies prefer FDI to exporting to gain access to new or larger markets, gain cost advantages in the host country and in response to trade barriers. There has been significant global growth of FDI since 1982. Although the United States is the largest home and host country of FDI, outflows have exceeded inflows. Japan in contrast, receives much less inflows than outflows. Cultural and financial management variations between countries do seem to influence the direction of FDI flow. Strategic governmental trade policies in recent years have supported the globalization to a more efficient world economy. Companies often get governmental assistance in attaining international economies of scale and first mover advantages. The huge inflows of FDI into the United States could be due to the falling value of the dollar in the late 1980s and early 1990s indicating exchange rates play a significant role in the choice of either horizontal or vertical FDI opportunities over exporting. Honda successfully used vertical FDI in the 1980s by establishing high quality operations in the United States. The company utilized U.S. suppliers for machine tools and parts capitalizing on currency exchange rates and local responsiveness. FDI is often preferred over licensing in the high technology or specialized industries, and in many cost sensitive industries. Significant research is necessary to evaluate the advantages of trade vehicles and their effects on the home country. Parent companies lobby for governmental policies that support free trade in order to gain competitive advantages in developing global markets. Many businesses suffer losses for m any years focusing on long-term growth potential. This paper will analyze the possible effects of FDI on the home country. Home country governments influence the ability of firms to invest in foreign countries. The radical view of FDI was popular until the end of the 1980s, and equated to the economic domination by companies rather than the economic development of nations. Radical policies were prevalent in communist countries and in Latin America in the 1960s-1970s. Radical regimes regularly expropriated multi-national companies and prohibited outward FDI. The collapse of communism, and the growth of the free market view marked the beginning of policies encouraging capital and technology transfers. The Smith and Ricardo Market Imperfections approach to FDI, involves maximizing gains and minimizing the costs of FDI. Most countries have adopted policies somewhere between the radical and free market approach, while still imposing some restrictions on outward FDI (Pragmatic nationalism). There are many potential benefits of FDI on the home country. Improvement in the balance of payments can be realized throu gh increased inward earnings, potential home country exports and foreign expertise that can be transferred back to the home economy. Opportunities to be exposed to new work practices and technology, can aid the home economy in managing and exploiting technology and knowledge-based assets. Higher living standards are also a general long-term benefit of outward FDI, due to the added value characteristics of comparative advantage, and more affordable products and services. Outward FDI could also detract from a home countrys capital stock. A negative balance of payments is possible if earnings arent realized in an acceptable time period. Also, if FDI is a substitute for direct exports or aimed at serving the home market from a low cost location, the balance of payments could be adversely affected. It could be argued however, that home country exports could be displaced over time by host country production whether it is by another foreign competitor or local companies opening their own d omestic operations. Thus, the opportunity cost is a loss of potential first mover advantage, as well as the loss of existing exports. In most cases studied, outward FDI results in complementary increases in exports over time, offering home country comparative advantages through efficiently organizing production to supply growing foreign markets. Reduced home country employment is an issue when FDI is substituted for domestic production (offshore production). Long-term home country resources are best utilized where they can add the most value and offer a comparative advantage. The impact of investment depends on whether the home countrys comparative advantage is in research and development, natural resources, or skilled labor-intensive industries. If efficiencies are realized then generally consumers of the home country benefit from reduced product prices. There is great wage disparity between the United States and many developing countries. It could be argued that outward FDI flow h as created a higher emphasis and value on the research and development class in relation to the unskilled class of workers in the United States. It is the role of government to balance the inefficiencies through policies that promote long-term consumer benefits of the home country. Assisting employees through educational assistance programs and training is one possible solution to elevating the lower skilled workforce. .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 , .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 .postImageUrl , .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 , .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465:hover , .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465:visited , .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465:active { border:0!important; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465:active , .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465 .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ua7629f61d48ba3f9cfd2c3f564f99465:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Road Not Taken EssayGovernments can encourage and restrict FDI in their home countries. Encouragement is offered in policies toward foreign risk insurance, financing arrangements, tax incentives, and pressuring foreign governments to remove trade barriers. Capital flow control restrictions are used in attaining balance of payments and in limiting funding of foreign investments. Many governments also utilize manipulation of tax rules in order to encourage firms to invest in the home country. Political disruptions or prohibitions in trading with certain countries are other ways that FDI outflows are restricted. World leaders have removed many restrictions on FDI in recent years resulting in phenomenal growth in the movement of capital. Capital abundance has been associated with countries that have lower interest rates and strong currencies as evidenced by the United States economy over the past twelve years. The Uruguay round of GATT and more recently the policies of the World Trade Organization (WTO) have included the services and intellectual property policies which now accounts for over half of all investment flows. Outward FDI is a strategic option that firms can now utilize for comparative advantages and increasing the home countrys national economy. Small countries for instance have small local markets and need to invest abroad for future economic growth and to fight against foreign competition. Home countries are also more inclined to plan production in countries that are near the developing customer base, decreasing transportation costs and enabling greater growth in attainment of e conomies of scale. Its important that the WTO and home country governments include issues such as human rights and environmental regulations when analyzing the trade-offs of outward FDI. In conclusion, it is apparent that outward FDI will continue to be a vehicle that companies will pursue in gaining comparative economic advantages resulting in higher revenues and profit growth. Customers should benefit from competition, which supports downward pricing, and the home countrys desire to get closer to their foreign customers thereby adapting to their preferences and production standards (local responsiveness). Relationship studies have shown a complementary correlation between outward FDI and exports. The benefits to the home country are even greater when both countries have strong currencies, low interest rates and an increasing GNP. Home country governments must analyze their balance of payments, and associated global risks when constructing outward FDI policies in serving its own na tional economic interests. The Stranger Essays (295 words) - Emotions, Absurdist Fiction

The Stranger Beatrice Guapo Period 4 May 1, 2000 What is love to Muersault My father once said, If you cannot love, then you cannot live. In the novel The Stranger by Albert Camus, Muersault, the main character would not be able to comprehend this statement, let alone agree. Love seems to have no importance to character Muersault. In the beginning of the novel Muersault mother passes away. Sunday was over, that Maman was buried now, that I was going back to work, really, nothing had changed. This is Muersault's thoughts two days after his mother's death. Usually when a person mother dies there is a long healing process that can last a life time, but in Muersault's case he shows no signs of loss or pain. He gives the impression that he did not love his mother, and feeling this way is okay. Muersault is involved with a young woman named Marie. One day Marie asks Muersault if he loves her, he tells her It didn't mean anything but that I didn't think so. When two people are involved, there is a mutual compassion and concern for each other's feeling. If one were to ask if the other loved them, and they did not, they would find a delicate and considerate manner to tell them how they felt. Muersault answer gives the impression that he had not given his and Marie's relationship any thought before that moment, love wasn't a meaningful enough issue to subject it to any thought. To Muersault the issue love does not deserve contemplation. His mother death and significant other love request were dealt with as though they were an everyday event. How can a person really know how to enjoy the virtues of life if they cannot see the importance of love. English Essays

From The Very Opening Of The Play When Richard III Enters Solus, The P

From the very opening of the play when Richard III enters solus, the protagonist's isolation is made clear. Richard's isolation progresses as he separates himself from the other characters and breaks the natural bonds between Man and nature through his efforts to gain power. The first scene of the play begins with a soliloquy, which emphasizes Richard's physical isolation as he appears alone as he speaks to the audience. This idea of physical isolation is heightened by his references to his deformity, such as rudely stamp'd...Cheated of feature by Dissembling Nature, deformed, unfinished. This deformity would be an outward indication to the audience of the disharmony from Nature and viciousness of his spirit. As he hates the idle pleasures of these days and speaks of his plots to set one brother against another, Richard seems socially apart from the figures around him, and perhaps regarded as an outsider or ostracized because of his deformity. His separation from is family is emphasized when he says Dive, thought's down to my soul when he sees his brother approaching. He is unable to share his thought with his own family as he is plotting against them. Thus, we are given hints of his physical, social and spiritual isolation which is developed throughout the play. But despite these hints, he still refers to himself as part of the House of York, shown in the repeated use of Our. The concept of Richard's physical isolation is reinforced in his dealings with Anne in Act I scene ii. She calls him thou lump of foul deformity and fouler toad during their exchange. Despite these insults, she still makes time to talk to Richard, and by the end of their exchange, she has taken his ring and been woo'd by him. After Richard has successfully gained the throne, he isolates himself when he asks the crowd to stand all apart in Act IV scene ii. And later, when Richard dreams, he is completely alone. Physical isolation in Richard's deformity wins sympathy from the audience as we pity his condition. But Richard uses his deformity as a tool against the other characters, to portray them as victimizing Richard. Thus the sense of tragedy is lessened by his own actions, even though his isolation may become greater as the play progresses. Richard's psychological isolation is conveyed through his lack of conscience in his murderous acts. Nowhere does he feel remorse for his murders, until Act V scene iii when he exclaims Have mercy Jesu! and O coward conscience, how dost thou afflict me!. In this turning point, Richard's division from his own self is made clear from I and I, and Is there a murderer here? No. Yes, I am! He has conflicting views of himself and realizes that no creature loves him, not even himself. We also never the real mind of Richard, for he is always playing a role, of a loving brother to Clarence, a lover to Anne or a victim to the others. We feel sympathy for Richard as he awakes in a vulnerable position and for the first time acknowledges the evil that he has done. But as he only reveals his feelings of guilt in the last act of the play, we do not see him in internal turmoil and thus the sense of psychological tragedy cannot be built upon. Socially, Richard is isolated from both the upper and lower classes of society. In Act I scene iii, Richard sarcastically calls Elizabeth sister, and she contemptuously calls him Brother of Gloucester making a mockery of familial bonds. Margaret calls him cacodemon and devil, and any unity that the characters have on stage is temporary and superficial. In act III, the citizens are said to be mum and deadly pale, which gives a sense of quiet opposition to Richard's activities. Richard is thus separated from all around him. Temporarily, we see Richard and Buckingham share a kind of bond, as Richard calls him My other self, My Oracle and My prophet. But they part when Buckingham hesitates to kill the young princes when Richard says I wish the bastards dead. This is the only time the audience sees Richard act with any other man, but we realize that it is for purely political

Spanish Conquistadors DBQ essays In one of his speeches to his men, Cortez spoke of the great rewards that will come to them, his men, for their services. Without disguising it at all Cortez tells his men that they will be the richest of all men who have crossed the seas, engaging in a ... war which will bring [them] fame, and Almighty God, in whose name and faith [war] will be waged. All in the same speech, Cortez had his men understand their reasoning for being in the Americas. These motives were of Gold, God and Glory. Not a century after Columbus voyage to the Indies, the Spaniards were left without any exotic spices, flowers, etc. So they made the best of the situation and used the New World to catapult their wealth as shown by excerpts of a Spanish proclamation, Bernal Diaz and Hernan Cortez, spread the faith of the Catholic Church as emphasized by Cortez, de Sepulveda, the Pope and de las Casas, and create a name for themselves as stated by Bernal Diaz, Cortez and de Sepulveda. Spanish attitudes towards the Natives were influenced by these motives resulting mainly in cultural chauvinism and disrespect, and also protection of the Natives. Dreams of riches provided a backbone for many of Spains vie for renown in the unexplored lands, both as individuals and for their people, and often at the expense of native societies. As seen from the excerpts from a Spanish proclamation (1) to Indians, read in Spanish, the conquistadors used the excuse that if the Indians didnt convert to Christianity willingly, they would take their land, turn women and children into slaves, and obviously take their riches as well. This proclamation views the Indians as stupid and inferior to their race, it clearly showed disrespect as well as cultural chauvinism towards the natives. Human Reasource Management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Human Reasource Management - Essay Example Advancements in the field of transport and communication, growing international trade and greater interaction of firms have lead to greater competition with in the growing world market. Organizations in search of better and more effective ways of production have identified the productivity of the labor force involved as the prime focus. The several techniques employed to tackle major challenges in the current environment are: Recruitment and selection is a very important aspect for development of a strong workforce. Companies need individuals who are motivated and focused for excellence, individuals whose presence increases the productivity of not only the firm but also assists other employees to be more productive. Large corporations now incorporate assessments such as personality tests, aptitude tests along with a series of interviews to asses the ability of the applicant (Cornelius, 2001). It has been an understood fact that interaction with in a group containing diverse members allows for a greater pool of innovative ideas, perspective and views according to their respective background to crop up. Such groups are very common in Multinational corporations (MNCs) (Connell, 2006). Such managements have to deal with strong local bodies combined with individuals transferred from other foreign countries who go through culture-based human resource management training to improve their ability to motivate the culturally diverse labor force. Gain Sharing The extensive emphasis on financial gains makes the technique of gain sharing very effective. This program refers to incentive plans where an employee in a common effort to improve the organizational productivity with the incentive that resulting increment will be shared between the company and the employee. Since the gain sharing is carried out on the effective increment in profits this technique does not cost the company while it motivates the employee to put in greater effort and take on greater responsibilities (Lauver, 2007). Working Environment Several researches on labor productivity identifies that a safe, peaceful and directed working environment greatly adds to the productivity of the labor force. Companies boast their ranking amongst the companies with the best working environment to attract talented individuals (Al-Lamki, 2000). An effective working environment means that each individual can feel part of the team; he or she is provided the best possible tools to work to his or her maximum ability. In the current times talented individuals are sought after vigorously amongst competing firms, firms try to lure in individuals with financial gains but creative individuals also have a need to full fill their own ambitions so they try to opt for firms that will allow them to be more productive (Legge, 1995). An effective working environment also assists in preventing labor turnover; employees who get adjusted into the
